To the West
Exactly 50 years after the building of the Berlin Wall, the Berlin Wall Memorial park opened near to the Berlin Wall Documentation Center on Bernauer Strasse. The park involves areas of grass, with objet d'art that are based on the Wall and panel displays. Visitors can use an audio guide. Not only tourists but also local residents visit here in large numbers.
My strongest impression was from a plate that described the many tunnels dug during the period when the wall existed, when many people tried to escape to the West. These tunnels were so long that I felt faint learning that they were manually dug.
